AI from Veritone has been used for video discovery, metadata enrichment, and search capabilities at the ADAC TotalEnergies 24h Race at the Nürburgring.

The event, held in Germany last month, is one of the largest international motor racing events and features an average of 180 cars and between 600 to 800 hobbyist and professional drivers.

The Nürburgring is a combination of a Grand Prix circuit and the Nordschleife (North Loop), and runs through the forests of Germany’s Eifel region and stretches 25,378 km.

The 24-hour endurance race has gained a cult-like following, as well as high demand for video footage. Last year, media coverage reached eight national broadcasts, 318 international broadcasts and over 3,250 hours of transmission time.

The aiWARE functionality included in the Veritone Digital Media Hub was this year used to change the way footage is processed, stored and distributed. The platform built by base, in partnership with Veritone,  provides the foundational cloud infrastructure that creates the globally accessible content hub providing search and discovery solutions for racing teams, advertisers and media. Base integrated accelerated file transfer and object storage, enabling fully cloud-based distribution of media assets.

It processes and tags large amounts of video data quickly and thoroughly, enabling marketers, event organisers and stakeholders to search through that data and pinpoint the most relevant content for their needs.

By using Veritone aiWARE, the official event footage is uploaded in smaller increments and made readily searchable by automating metadata tagging. AI transcription, optical character recognition and logo recognition from the aiWARE ecosystem made it possible for users to start researching and editing content on a near-live basis while the race is still ongoing.

Matthias Wurm, managing director of SPORTTOTAL, the production company that brought in the Veritone aiWARE search capabilities, said: “We are very happy about the cooperation with Veritone as it strengthens our efforts in digital transformation around the mediatisation of the major international sporting event that is the ADAC TotalEnergies 24h-Race. The Digital Media Hub delivers added value to all our partners and accelerates processes to fulfill content requests.”

Nikolaus Spaleck, managing director of one of the event partners EMPA GmbH, added: “By offering this new system, we can provide a whole new solution to stakeholders like sponsors, individual teams and media. Digital Media Hub facilitates the quick and easy access needed for large and small video projects, and allows stakeholders to streamline their unilateral production and post production workflows–especially with the relevant metadata that Digital Media Hub automatically produces, allowing everyone to move more efficiently than before.”

Scott Leatherman chief marketing officer at Veritone, said: “We are proud to offer a solution that enables intelligent search across all media assets including broadcast-quality video, still images, audio, and other ancillary files. Particularly at such a scale as the Nürburgring Race, content sharing is instantly accelerated and production workflows enhanced. That’s a win for everyone.”
