BT Sport Takeover 2022

BT Sport has announced the fourth edition of its Takeover show - which is created, produced, and filmed by students from NewVic Sixth Form College.

It will air on BT Sport 2 at 6.45pm on 28 January, and is the result of an eight-week course on the fundamentals of TV production given to 12 local students.

The Takeover show will be presented by Ali, Ameila, and Rahima (students from the course), and will focus on the BT Sport United commitment, which aims to champion positive social change in three areas, community, inclusivity and sustainability.

Community is covered when the show travels to the Peak District with an organisation called the Muslim Hikers, founded by Harron Mota, to gain an insight into how outdoor sports can be made inclusive to south asian communities.

Inclusivity is shown through a meeting with Javeno Mclean, owner of J7 Health centre, who offers free personal training to elderly and disabled people in the Manchester area. Meanwhile, sustainability is examined when the team head over to Oxfordshire to meet Asylum Welcome, an organisation which helps asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable migrants, to focus on the organisation’s recycled bicycle project scheme and how these refurbished bikes allow asylum seekers and refugees to get to work, access education, attend appointments or pursue leisure activities in the community.

The students also worked with up and coming Afro Swing music artist Kimbo 20 also from Newham to provide the music which closes the show, his debut song ‘Searching’.

What I have learnt throughout the whole 8 weekcourse, creating an amazing TV show, was what I really want to become in the future as media has always been my favourite subject.  I have always been keen on working in the TV industry. Having this opportunity has really opened my eyes to a specific role in production that I would like to work in. From all the research, the shoots and the edits, BT Sport Takeover has been the best experience I have ever come across, which has changed my perspective and led me to know who I want to become and what I want to be.”

Paul Jones, media teacher at NewVic Sixth Form, said: “The BT Sport Takeover project is an invaluable opportunity for our NewVic media students. Each year we have had the privilege of being involved has been truly amazing! Students return after the 8 week project with a new found confidence which is the result of their time spent learning about the industry, job roles, developing new skills, working as a team and being immersed in a fast paced, professional environment. The quality of the work they are creating is extremely impressive, we are so proud of them and we are very grateful to BT Sport for this opportunity.”
