The documentary will focus on Carbonell’s return to professional swimming after the birth of her child.
Rakuten TV has annoucned new documentary, Ona Carbonell: Starting Over, which will be available for free on the platform from autumn 2021.
The programme follows Carbonell, who won silver and bronze medals in the synchronized swimming women’s duet and team event respectively at the 2012 Olympics, in her day-to-day life over the past eleven months following the birth of her son and her preparation for competing at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.
It aims to inspire women who want to continue their professional aspirations without giving up motherhood.
Production began in summer 2020, and it is directed by Adán Bonet (Operación Triunfo, Tabús). Personal reflections, scenes from her closest environment and personal videos recorded by Carbonell aim to tell her story.
Viewers will travel with her to sessions with her physical trainer and training at the high-performance centre, together with her teammates in the Spanish National Team of Artistic Swimming.
They will also see the other side - such as the conciliation of her work and family life, and encounters with her close circle of family and friends, which includes some personalities from the sport.
Carbonell explained her motivation: “My goal was to return to competition after giving birth, not only for sport, but especially for moral duty. Motherhood is still one of the handicaps women face in sport and society.”
Teresa Lopez, EU content director at Rakuten TV, added: “Empowerment and optimism are core values of our company and Ona captures them perfectly in her day-to-day life, with her unwavering determination.”
