Wimbledon Film and TV Studios, previously home to ITV1’s The Bill, opened for business this week after £500,000 was spent refurbishing the 220,000 sq ft site.

“It’s been repainted and a swipe-card entry system has been installed, which is essential for a commercial entity,” said managing director Piers Read.

Two of the sound stages have been sound-proofed, and the studio complex has increased its collection of over 50 free standing sets with the addition of a House of Commons set.

There are also plans to build a high definition-capable studio for use by light entertainment shows by mid-May.

“From earliest pre-production, to shooting and into post-production, we have the facilities, expertise and space to offer clients a self-contained studio complex,” Read added.

“Everything is here from large production offices, sound stages, over 50 purpose built location sets, 2D and 3D post-production suites.”

The consortium, led by Piers Read and John Brennan and backed by investor Panther Securities, purchased Merton Studios from Fremantle Media in September 2010 for £5m.
