University of Oregon student Quinn Connell won a competition to land the opportunity to create the title sequence for the event
World Athletics Productions has commissioned a student from the University of Oregon to complete the title sequence for its host broadcast coverage of the 2022 World Athletics Championships.
The event begins on 15 July, with titles created by student Quinn Connell, who landed the opportunity to produce the 30-second sequence after winning a competition held by the University of Oregon. The work was professionally guided by faculty member and Oregon Reality Lab manager Nikki Dunshire.
As part of a wider collaboration with the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communications, at least 10 students will join the production team in a range of roles including camera operator, editor, broadcast liaison and production runner.
The World Athletics Championships run from 15-24 July in Eugene, Oregon – the first time they have been held in the United States – and will be broadcast in more than 100 territories worldwide with a cumulative audience of 1 billion.
World Athletics Productions, which is a joint venture between World Athletics and ITN, will cover more than 350 hours of action over 10 days, with more than 120 cameras, 10 live control rooms and a crew of 400.
Connell said: “This feels like a great honour and an epic payoff to my years of hard work behind the scenes. I just love this style of editing and to have it reach so many people truly feels extraordinary.”
Mark Fulton, executive producer, World Athletics Productions, added: “The students from the university that took part in the competition and the quality of the work they produced was phenomenal. What was hugely impressive was that way the students listened to the brief but very much put their own stamp and identity on their submissions.
“There was a panel of five judges who scored each of the videos. The top five were separated by just two points showing you the quality of entries that we had. Quinn’s choice of shots, music and brand identity just edged him ahead. We will be delighted to welcome him as part of our team for the World Championships in July.”
