Sky Sports and the BBC have agreed to broadcast Women’s Super League matches for the next three years.
BBC Sport controller of production, Steph Harries, has revealed the broadcaster’s high hopes for the Barclay’s Women’s Super League broadcast deal.
This week it was revealed that the BBC will broadcast 22 live Super League matches a season, with a minimum of 18 of those on BBC1 and BBC2. The deal runs for three campaigns from the 2021/22 season.
This runs alongside a new agreement between Sky Sports and the Women’s Super League to broadcast a minimum of 35 games a season with the same treatment as it gives the Premier League in terms of build-up, reactions, and more.
Speaking at the Broadcast Sport Breakfast Club this week, Harries said of the groundbreaking deal: “It’s important that representation isn’t just behind the scenes, but it’s on the field as well. The news about the Women’s Super League this week was very exciting.
“It will advance women’s football exponentially. We think this will be a real watershed moment.”
She continued: “A crucial part of that journey was the 2019 Women’s World Cup. The rise of women’s football was incredibly exciting, 28 million people tuned in, with the second biggest audience of 11.7 million for the semi final.”
Harries added: “At the BBC we have an obligation to represent women’s sport. We often lead with a women’s sport story and that should become the norm when warranted.”
