Produced by Sparky Pictures, the documentary will be available on all major digital streaming platforms. Launched in 2018, Sparky Pictures has previously worked on films such as Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Good Posture, Blue, Sharkwater Extinction and The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then The Bigfoot.
Wayne follows the story of Australian motorcycle champions Wayne Gardner, known as the “Wollongong Whizzkid”. Starting from his childhood riding around his hometown on a 5-dollar dirt bike to becoming the 1987 World Motorcycle Grand Prix Champion and a national icon.
Gardner’s career took him from local motorcycle racing where he caught the attention of a famous Japanese team boss and engineer, Mamoru Moriwaki. Moriwaki invited him to race in England and beyond, where he his first race and permanently stamped his name on international motorcycle racing.
However, Gardner’s brash style led to clashes with other drivers, and he desperately missed his girlfriend Donna Forbes - who had been the cornerstone to his success. Once she had joined him, Gardner was able to keep his head and climb the ranks.
Wayne: The Wayne Gardner story will feature extensive archive footage and interviews with Gardner, his long-term girlfriend Donna, family, friends and rivals as it charts the highs and lows of his career.
