The sailing competition will return in May
SailGP has revealed its plans for season 3, which will begin in Bermuda in May 2022.
Two new teams, from Canada and Switzerland, join the current roster from Australia, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United States. In addition, it has expanded from eight to ten events, with seven taking place in 2022 and the final three in 2023. Eight new cities will be hosting events during the campaign.
The competition will be broadcast live in over 175 territories, including UK/Ireland (Sky Sports), Australia (Fox Sports), Denmark (TV2 Sport), France (Canal+ Sport), Japan (J Sports), New Zealand (Sky Sport), South East Asia (beIN SPORTS), Spain (RTVE and TV3), and the U.S. (CBS Sports). The SailGP app and digital platforms will also show the action.
SailGP is also aiming to accelerate its sustainability efforts and Women’s Pathway Program - to improve inclusion in the sport.
A new aspect of the viewers’ experience will be SailGP Insights - which will provide fans with statistics from over 30,000 data points from the competition’s F50 catamarans. It will launch for the final two races of season 2, in Australia and the US, before continuing in season 3.
Powered by Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, it will deliver real-time statistics such as ride height, ride time, current boat speed in real-time, maximum speed of each boat during a specific race, the direction of the boats, the live wind speed, and alerts of key race incidents. In season 3, wingsail data, rudder differential data and foil pitch movement will be added.
