Mohammed Farah wins initiative run with support of production companies Jams & Mr B, Rondo Media, and Media Atom

Mohammed H. Farah S4C bursary

S4C has revealed Mohammed Farah as the winner of its sports broadcasting bursary.

The Welsh broadcaster, with support of production companies Jams & Mr B, Rondo Media, and Media Atom, launched the initiative earlier this year. It offers a bursary worth £9,000 for a student from a Black, Asian or minority ethnic background to study a sports broadcasting master’s degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Jams & Mr B founders Jason Mohammad and Nathan Blake spoke to the Broadcast Sport Podcast about their work to promote diversity back in May.

Farah, who is from Cardiff, is a Welsh learner and S4C will support his efforts to continue learning the language with the National Centre for Learning Welsh, and by using resources from Say Something in Welsh.

Farah said: “I was working as a security guard at BBC Media City in Salford part-time while I was studying a degree in Sport Science. Working there showed me what an interesting career sport broadcasting media is, and I approached journalist Jason Mohammad, who like myself was from Cardiff. I told him I was interested in a career in sport media, and he advised me about the bursary that S4C, Media Atom, Rondo and his production company were offering.

“I’m extremely happy that I been offered this amazing opportunity to be on this degree programme which will teach me about sports broadcasting for the new digital media age. I’m looking forward to developing my broadcast production skills, like self-shoot editing, making digital content and recording and producing radio content. I’m also self-learning Welsh, which has been a challenge, but I am determined to improve.”

Jason Mohammad, Jams & Mr B director, said: “Mohammed has shown an incredible appetite to learn and create a pathway in sports broadcasting. He showed our production company that he has a tenacity to work and knowledge of sport. Now, thanks to S4C and our partners, Mohammed can push on and be a trailblazer for the Muslim community in Wales. Fantastic.”

Nia Edwards-Behi, S4C’s diversity and inclusion officer, said: “We’re very pleased to be able to offer our sports bursary to such an enthusiastic and ambitious student as Mohammed.

“The goal of this bursary is to offer opportunities to Welsh students from different backgrounds and enrich the Broadcast industry in Wales with fresh talent.

“I would like to thank our partners Jams & Mr B, Rondo Media and Media Atom for making this such an enticing opportunity to someone wishing to pursue a career in sports broadcasting.”
