Peak of 9.3m on BBC1 with 2m streams
A peak of 9.3 million tuned into BBC1 to watch England defeat Sweden 4-0 in the Euro 2022 semi-final on Tuesday evening (27 July).
There were another two million streams of the game through BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website, taking the total viewing over 11 million. This comes after 9.1 million saw the Lionesses overcome Spain in the quarter final.
There was an average audience of 6.7 million, with a 43% share of viewing across the three hour broadcast.
Viewership of the tournament has grown quickly as it has played out, with this total dwarfing the just under 4.5 million who watched the first game, a 1-0 victory for England over Austria. That time round, 3.7m watched on BBC1, with 750,000 streaming through BBC Sport and iPlayer.
The highest ever peak audience for women’s football in the UK is the 11.7 million who watched England’s defeat to the USA in the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup. This could be beaten by the final, where England will face either Germany or France on Sunday (31 July).
Overall, the tournament is also expected to break records for overall TV viewership with it predicted that it will reach 250 million people worldwide. In addition, Euro 2022 has already broken the attendance record for the women’s Euros, with the 357,993 who attended during the group stage already more than the 240,055 who went to the matches at the 2017 edition in the Netherlands.
