1.3 billion people are expected to watch on a computer or phone
A report from digital intelligence company MiQ has found that 1.3 billion people are expected to watch the Olympics through a computer or phone.
This growth is builing on the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, which saw a 128% increase on online video consumption when compared to the 2014 edition.
There is some evidence that this may be due to the time difference of the competition in Japan, as Australian fans are expected to watch on TV more than usual this time - with only two hours time difference to Tokyo there.
Other findings from the report include baby boomers being the top viewers in the EU, with the exact opposite true in the US - where gen Z and millenials watch the most. It is unclear how this is affected by populations being older in general in western Europe.
Tokyo 2020 was also more popular among younger viewers in South East Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
For search interest, the Olympics is most popular in the US, with the UK second and Australia third. Canada is the country with the fourth most interest, taking the countries’ populations into account.
