NFL exec confirms league looking to enter D2C market
The NFL is reportedly developing an “NFL+” streaming direct-to-consumer streaming service.
According to The Athletic, the league is looking for a way to distribute its content to mobiles, tablets, and laptops before the next season, having previously streamed them for free on phones or with partners such as Yahoo.
The idea could go to an owners’ vote in May, with the next season set to begin in September.
NFL chief media and business officer, Brian Rolapp, confirmed that the idea is “under consideration” this week, adding: “The theme here is that over the next couple of years, you’re going to see the NFL get into direct-to-consumer in a much bigger way.”
However, Rolapp also said that the NFL is still in talks with other companies about the platforms.
If the NFL were to go ahead with a streaming service, it would be following in the footsteps of the NBA and its NBA League Pass platform - which gives fans all over the world access to all NBA games and other content.
