LaLiga is aiming to modify its domestic broadcast rights auction to bring in new bidders, Broadcast Sport can confirm.

The league is looking at introducing packages like that which the Premier League sold to Amazon Prime Video, where the OTT streaming platform airs two entire gameweeks. Three matchdays being introduced around the New Year from next season could give an opportunity to do this.

This is among a variety of new packages being considered with the aim of enticing new broadcasters.

LaLiga is taking this action after seeing the rights market across Europe take a dip during the pandemic. The Premier League managed to avoid losses by rolling over its current deals with Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime Video, and the BBC on the same terms, but Serie A and the Bundesliga have both sold their rights at lower prices than before, and Ligue 1 possibly faces even bigger losses in revenue after Mediapro dropped out of broadcasting its matches.

The main buyer of domestic rights in Spain, Telefonica SA, has already signalled that it too is looking to lower the price. Chief financial officer Laura Abasolo told Bloomberg TV: “In the past auction, we managed to have a deflationary outcome - it would be great to do it again.”

Amazon Prime Video already hosts LaLiga TV as a paid add-on in the UK, and has a host of documentary films about teams in the division. Other OTT platforms have been linked with sports rights on the continent, with DAZN picking up the Serie A rights, and Disney linked with making an entry into the market.
