AVP Uncovered follows four athletes on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball tour.
BYB Pictures has produced a behind-the-scenes beach volleyball documentary, AVP Uncovered, in conjunction with the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour.
The five-part series will be released on its own YouTube channel today, 28 July, and follows four athletes at different stages in their careers as they compete in the tour - showing their home life, training, travel and competition.
15th ever Indoor and Beach Volleyball All-American Taryn Kloth, most successful player in NCAA Beach Volleyball history Kristen Nuss, four time Team USA Olympian and 34x AVP Champion Jake Gibb, and two time NCAA Beach Volleyball National Champion Zana Muno star in the series, with high points including witnessing the former two’s run from the qualifier all the way to the championship as they become one of the only teams to ever win their first event. There is also a look at Gibb and Muno’s home and training life in the South Bar of LA, Gibb competing in his home event for the last time in his career, and much more.
It was directed by Mark Bucknam, co-produced by Bucknam and Bruce Bendheim, filmed by Howard Yang and Bendheim, and edited by Yang. The docuseries was made over three weeks of filming in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, and Baton Rouge, and at each AVP Gold Series stop of 2021.
Bucknam said: “This series was inspired by a quote, Sarah Ban Breathnach said ’the world needs dreamers, and the world needs doers, but above all, the world needs dreamers who do.’ I personally fell in love with beach volleyball in 2018, and realized quickly that there is a passionate fan base who are hungry for more ways to engage with the sport, and athletes that they love.
“As a fan myself, I wanted to watch a show that let me inside the lives of various types of athletes, athletes who are brand new to the pro scene, athletes who are trying to figure out how to make a sustainable living playing this game, or athletes who had accomplished all they could ever have hoped and are ready to step away.
“Through AVP Uncovered, we’ve been able to tell those stories, and I can finally watch the show I wish existed in 2018 when I first found volleyball. Our hope is that this series will have a positive impact on the sport by using these human stories to spread the word about beach volleyball to all sports fans, and lay the foundation for more media coverage around this beautiful game.”
Beach volleyball is the just the latest sport to follow in the footsteps of F1’s Drive To Survive with a behind-the-scenes documentary. Tennis, golf, MotoGP are among others to have done the same.
