This year’s championship has now come to an end, following the cancellation of the final two races in the US and Mexico due to a lack of funding
The current season of women’s motorsport series W Series is to end early, following a lack of investment. The US and Mexico races will no longer go ahead.
It’s the third season of the W Series, which airs on both Channel 4 and Sky Sports.
The W Series Silverstone race earlier this year attracted a peak UK audience of one million, which was its highest ever race audience to date. The race was also the most-watched motorsport event outside of F1 since 2014, with an average audience of 714,000 tuning in to see it.
With the brakes now applied for this season, British driver Jamie Chadwick (who has a 50-point lead) will win the series. She also won both previous W Series trophies.
In a statement, the W Series organisers said: “The required funding due to the business from a recent contracted investment was not received.” This has meant the finances are no longer in place for the final two races to be held.
W Series chief executive Catherine Bond Muir is reported to have said she is extremely confident the W Series will continue as planned next year. The race has a prize pot of US$1.5 million. Bond Muir is reported to have said: “Where I sit at the moment, I expect that to be paid out. I can’t say 100 per cent…but where I stand at the moment, I don’t see any reason why that won’t be the case.”
