All Star Dance Off is the first production to receive funding from the Creative Tech Format Fund, launched by Yahoo and dentsu’s The Story Lab
Interstellar’s forthcoming ITV2 one-off All Star Dance Off is the first production to receive funding from the Creative Tech Format Fund, which launched in April by Yahoo and dentsu’s The Story Lab.
The production features a virtual set environment, which was created through the involvement of the Creative Tech Format Fund. The six-figure development fund gives UK content creators and brands the opportunity to experiment with creative technologies at Yahoo’s production studios in London, including XR Stage, motion capture and volumetric capture.
The fund was established to help produce proof-of-concepts to ”entertain audiences in new and exciting ways”. All Star Dance Off uses the studio’s XR smart stage to immerse the hosts in a virtual set environment, from which they comment on all the action happening on location – in a strip club in Basildon and an abandoned carpark in South London.
The show sees RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner The Vivienne and actor comedian Steen Raskopoulos present as celebrity feuds are settled by dance battles. The 30-minute show is aimed at the core ITV2 16–34 year-old audience. The Story Lab will distribute the format globally.
Geoff Goodwin, senior director, studios and virtual production at Yahoo, said: “Creative technology has the ability to supercharge interactive and immersive entertainment and our Creative Tech Format Fund with The Story Lab is helping content creators and brands enhance the future of storytelling and entertainment experiences through technology with our XR studio capabilities. By using tech like our XR stage, we’re able to bring immersive new formats like All Star Dance Off to life.”
Robbie Ashcroft, development partner at The Story Lab UK added: “All Star Dance Off is a fantastic first show to emerge from our Creative Tech Format Fund. We’re delighted it allowed Interstellar to think bigger and deliver higher production values for their really fun concept.”
Jamie Ormerod, creative director at Interstellar, said: “All Star Dance Off is a transmittable pilot so every aspect of the show had to be worthy of a potential series. By working with The Story Lab, Yahoo and the team at their XR studio, we created a virtual studio environment that was bespoke to the format and looked fantastic.”
