The three-day Sportel Monaco event (21-23 October) has introduced a new ‘innovation zone’ dedicated to showcasing emerging sports tech.

The annual sports media tradeshow has had a focus on tech developments for the last five years, but this year it’s ramped this up with a new space in the exhibition hall. The innovation zone will shine the spotlight on start-ups, enabling them to “present their innovations to the leaders in the sports media rights industry,” says Sportel.

Sports tech companies including ContentArmor (anti-piracy), Fansoft corporation (fan engagement/fantasy sports), Dazzl (cloud-based video production) have already signed up to take space in the innovations zone.

ANTI-PIRACY

Seminar name: Fighting pirates and evicting scouts - enforcing rights in sports media rights and live betting data

In an age where distributing coverage of sports events over the internet is becoming increasingly important, the threat posed by online digital piracy continues to grow apace. Equally, as the value of rights in live data from sports events continues to grow, data scouts are increasingly seeking to sell their own “unofficial” data feeds for use in the betting market. DLA Piper’s Ruth Hoy considers some of the methods rightsholders can use to protect their rights, and whether global problems such as online piracy require rightsholders to collaborate in order to produce a global solution.
