‘Hugely entertaining and engaging for a broad audience. This was my gold medal winner’
Whisper for Channel 4
The awards judges were unanimous in their selection of Today In Tokyo, which showcased the best of the action during the Paralympics.
Produced by Whisper for Channel 4, the daily show combined the top sporting moments from the Games with a look at the host city of Tokyo, in a format that worked to overcome challenging Covid restrictions.
Presenter Ade Adepitan toured Japan’s capital in a state-of-the-art taxi with a fixed rig of cameras to capture his adventures and the people he met along the way. The centre screen inside the taxi allowed pundits and athletes – from Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson to Dame Sarah Storey – to join him to reflect on the day’s events.
The show met the challenge of a remote production set-up, with the team split between Tokyo and London, delivering a crafted show with a live playout just two hours after the day’s action had finished.
“Exceptional,” is how one judge described Today In Tokyo, adding that it proved “hugely entertaining and engaging for a broad audience”, with a contemporary tone and energy.
“Never shying away from the disabilities of the athletes, this programme battled severe Covid restrictions to provide an informative and entertaining experience,” said another judge. “This was my gold medal winner.”
