Fremantle strikes deal for series created by Duplass brothers
The Duplass brothers’ indie drama Penelope is heading to Sky and streaming service Now in the UK and Ireland following a deal by Fremantle.
Created and executive produced by Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn of Duplass Brothers Productions (Somebody Somewhere), the 8 x 30-minute series follows 16-year-old Penelope (Megan Stott) who tuns away to the unknown wilderness to begins a new life for herself.
The show premiered in September on Netflix in the US, landing in the top 10 TV shows in its first week.
Eslyn and Duplass said: “We’re in great company on Sky. Penelope has had such an overwhelmingly positive response and sparked conversation all over the world. We can’t wait to take her story to audiences in the UK and Ireland.”
Executive vice president of co-production & distribution, EMEA, international at Fremantle, Jamie Lynn said: “Duplass Brothers Productions has a unique ability to craft deeply human, character-driven and timely stories. In an age where social media plays such a huge role in young people’s lives, it’s refreshing to see a lead like Penelope - one who defies expectations and forges her own path.”
Jay Duplass (Industry) also produces alongside Shuli Hare, while Eslyn also directs and serves as showrunner.
Duplass Brothers Productions’ first-look deal with HBO has led to the series Room 104, Togetherness, Animals and Somebody Somewhere.
