BSkyB has bought 15,000 3DTV sets from LG Electronics so that its new 3D channel can be broadcast to pubs, clubs and other public venues around the UK.

The Korean electronics giant announced the strategic partnership today.

It said: “The deal to supply the broadcaster with 15,000 3D TVs is the largest deal of its kind. Sky plans to install the TVs in public venues across the UK in advance of plans to broadcast weekly Premier League matches in 3D beginning this spring.”

The Sky 3D service is due to launch in public venues in April. A consumer service to the home is due to come online in the autumn.

Sky trialled its 3DTV service to pubs in January when it broadcast a football match between Arsenal and Manchester United (pictured).
