RTÉ has aired a 60-minute documentary that was filmed entirely with an iPhone.
RTÉ News has screened news packages shot on iPhone but the Irish broadcaster says it is the first time a European broadcaster has commissioned and shot a feature-length documentary in 4K on an iPhone.
The Collectors, which was produced by the RTÉ Factual Unit, tells the story of six people who are dedicated collectors of everything from Barbies to Coca Cola memorabilia.
RTÉ One and RTÉ2 channel controller Adrian Lynch said: “Great storytelling is what television is all about and RTÉ is always looking at new ways and new technologies to bring those stories to life.
“The Collectors offers a fascinating insight into the world of Irish collectors, but it is also a great example of how RTÉ is embracing new technologies to deliver innovative programming for Irish viewers.
“I’m delighted to see RTÉ leading the way in this exciting area and, on the back of the documentary, we’re now looking at doing a series for young filmmakers using iPhones.”
The Collectors was conceived and shot by mobile journalist Eleanor Mannion who filmed in locations across Ireland, London, New York and Portugal. It was produced by Jean Devlin and edited by Emmet McCarthy.
