Bectu members at Red Bee Media are to take part in a ballot for industrial action as part of a row over redundancy rights.

According to the union, the media management and broadcast services company wants to change redundancy terms for existing staff, a move that would see entitlements reduced to two weeks’ wages per year of service.

Notice of the union’s intention to ballot has been served and ballot papers will be distributed on 19 March.

The vote will run until 15 April 2010.

National official, Suresh Chawla, said: “Following our members categorical rejection of the proposals, we requested a meeting with the employer to continue negotiations and to avert industrial action.

“Unfortunately Red Bee has refused our request and we have no option now but to ballot. The changes proposed are so damaging that we will be urging members to vote in favour of industrial action.”

Affected staff are covered by redundancy terms inherited from their previous employer, the BBC.

When contacted by Broadcast, Red Bee Media declined the opportunity to comment.
