Pinewood Shepperton is to open its doors wider to TV productions in an attempt to see its way out of the current UK downturn in film production, which saw the film and TV studios post losses of£100,000 last week.

Last year£10.7m (28%) of Pinewood Shepperton's turnover was classed as TV and sound services, a figure that chief executive Ivan Dunleavy is keen to increase. "We have always had a strategy of wanting to host more TV productions - as seen by the acquisition of Teddington - and we'd like to build on that. There's no upper limit," Dunleavy told Broadcast. He added that Pinewood's Theatre 2 had now been upgraded into a purpose-built TV post-production facility.

But so far TV bookings for 2005 are£1m down on 2004 at£5m. Interim results showed turnover for the first six months of 2005 down to£13.3m compared with£20.5m in 2004, which Dunleavy blamed on uncertainty over tax breaks and the poor exchange rate with the dollar.
