Panasonic, Samsung and Sony have joined forces to launch a range of universal 3D glasses in an effort to speed up the adoption of 3D technology.

The electronics giants, together with 3D glasses manufacturer Xpand, announced that they will work on the “Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative” for the licensing of radio frequency (RF) systems for active glasses technology for televisions, personal computers, projectors and 3D cinemas.

The standard will include the infrared systems jointly developed by Panasonic and Xpand and the proprietary protocols of Samsung and Sony.

Development of the standard will begin in September with the manufacturers to sell the technology from next year.

2011 models of 3D active TVs are expected to be backwards-compatible with the glasses.

“We hope the expanded collaboration on this 3D standardisation initiative will make a significant contribution toward accelerating the growth of 3D-related products,” added Masayuki Kozuka, general manager of Panasonic’s Media and Content Alliance Office, Corporate R&D Division.
