The Golden Ticket is a reality format inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
A reality format based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the first unscripted project to emerge from Netflix’s Roald Dahl catalogue.
The Golden Ticket will pit contestants against each other to win then chance to enter a whimsical wonderland inspired by Dahl’s beloved 1964 novel.
To enter the contest, they will need a coveted golden ticket. However, to achieve success in the high-stakes contest, the players must adapt and strategise as the golden ticket will only get them so far. Willy Wonka’s guests must withstand games, tests and temptations designed to test their instincts, resilience and ability to thrive in the chaos of the ‘retro-futuristic dreamscape’.
The format is co-produced by Fremantle-backed Australian-American outfit Eureka Productions, who made Stars on Mars (Fox) and Million Dollar Island (Seven Network), and LA-based indie Crown Wilshire Productions. Casting is currently underway in the US.
The streamer acquired the Road Dahl Story Company in 2021.The Golden Ticket is the latest project based on Dahl’s works to be greenlit, following on from scripted projects Matilda the Musical, The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar and upcoming animated film The Twits.
Jeff Gaspin, vice president of unscripted at Netflix, said: “We are thrilled to bring the magic of The Chocolate Factory to life like never before. This one-of-a-kind reality competition blends adventure, strategy, and social dynamics, creating an experience that is as captivating as it is unpredictable. For the first time, a lucky few won’t just have to imagine the experience — they’ll get to step inside the factory and live it.”
