The first high-definition channel to use cloud-based technology launched this week, with LandscapeHD supplying its free-to-air channel in 1920 x 1080 progressive format.

The channel is using technology developed by London-based digital content firm Re:fine, which allows it to be controlled via a portal and offers remote playout to IPTV providers and broadcasters.

“People in TV have not cottoned on to how the cloud will change everything,” said Nick Austin, chairman of LandscapeHD, which shows “stunning images of natural and man-made subjects” set to classical and instrumental music.

“One of the reasons we are able to use the cloud is because from the first day we have had the global rights to the music we use.”

LandscapeHD airs between 6am and noon on Sky channel 203.
