Aussie drama travels around the world while The Traitors heads to Korea

The BBC has picked up the second series of Goalpost Pictures’ Australian drama Black Snow as part of a string of worldwide sales.  

The first series, starring Travis Fimmel as detective James Cormack, launched on BBC4 and iPlayer earlier this year having made its debut on Stan in Australia last year and subsequently launched on Sundance Now in the USA and Canada. The series is filmed in Queensland and set amongst the Glasshouse Mountains.

The second series, produced in association with All3Media International and Sundance Now and with financial support from Screen Queensland, Screen NSW and City of Gold Coast, will premiere on Stan on New Year’s Day 2025 and will return to US audiences on Sundance Now. 

All3Media International has also signed deals for the second season in TV4 (Sweden), MTV OY (Finland), Magenta TV (Germany), Canal+ (Austria), Cosmote (Greece) and Sýn hf (Iceland), OSN+ and OSNtv (Middle East) and TVNZ (New Zealand). 

Series one is heading to Prime Video in Africa, Acorn Media for Spain and Spanish-speaking Andorra, Blue Entertainment for German-speaking Switzerland and Lichtenstein, and RTBF for French-speaking Belgium. 

All3Media International’s executive vice president of content Maartje Horchner said: “Season one introduced viewers to a unique character-driven mystery drama, brought to life by an outstanding ensemble cast, and it quickly stood out as a viewer favourite in numerous territories.  

“With a second season now on the way, which sees Detective Cormack diving into a completely new mystery, the appeal of Black Snow can only continue to grow, offering broadcasters an exceptional, highly acclaimed returning drama with broad audience appeal.” 

The Traitors Korea 

All3Media International has sold IDTV’s global format phenomenon The Traitors to Korea, with production companies Luyworks Media (Physical 100, Show Me The Money) and Something Special set to adapt the format for the Korean market. It brings the total number of global sales for the format to over 30. 

Vice president of sales Asia Ziran (Tony) Tang said: “The Traitors is a phenomenal format in the industry, with over 30 versions worldwide we’re excited to see it take shape in Korea—one of the most competitive markets for formats.”

MasterChef and Survivor head to Germany 

Banijay Germany’s entertainment label Brainpool (Schlag den Star) is to produce MasterChef and Survivor, in partnership with AcunMedya, for German channel Sport1. 

MasterChef was created by Franc Roddam and has been commissioned in more than 70 markets, while Survivor, created by Charlie Parsons, has seen 50 adaptations. 

Brainpool’s managing director Shona Fraser said: “The Banijay Entertainment library is a wealth of bold, entertaining and highly adaptable formats, which we want German audiences to experience. I am personally a huge fan of both Survivor and MasterChef and am delighted they have found a new home with Sport1.” 

Sport1 has been 50 percent owned by Acun Medya since the summer.

Cineflix Rights has landed gloal sales for Redpoint Productions, Tanweer Productions, and C3 Media’s Leonard Cohen drama series So Long, Marianne following its premieres in Norway, Canada, Germany, and the UK.  

Czech TV, ERR (Estonia), HRT (Croatia), and TET (Latvia) are the latest buyers for the series, following the deals recently announced with Telefonica’s pay TV platform Movistar Plus+ for Spain and Australia’s SBS. 

The series focuses on Cohen falling in love with Norwegian woman Marianne Ihlen and is mostly filmed on the Greek island of Hydra where they lived during the 1960s.  

Cineflix Rights vice president of sales, Africa, CEE, Middle East, and Southern Mediterranean Lucy Rawson - who brokered the deals - said: “So Long, Marianne is one of the most iconic love stories of the last century, set in one of the most beautiful locations in the world, and is getting rave reviews from the critics in all the territories it’s launched so far.” 

It was produced with the support of the Norwegian Film Institute, Creative Europe MEDIA, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, and Rogers Cable Network Fund.

Beta Film has sold Italian WWII drama La Storia to the North American streaming service MHz Choice for the US and Canada, as well as YES and HOT for Israel.  

This is adding to the deals already closed with all Nordic broadcasters including NRK in Norway, YLE in Finland, SVT in Sweden and DR in Denmark.  

The eight-parter is based on the novel by Elsa Morante, the series is produced by Beta, Picomedia and Thalie Images in collaboration with Rai Fiction.
