A Body That Works and Leonard Cohen biopic Who by Fire first out of gate in eight-strong slate
Keshet Media Group is to invest around £25m into eight scripted projects over the next 12 months, to grow its domestic drama output.
The first projects out of the 100m shekel (£24.3m) investment include global production and distribution arm Keshet International’s Leonard Cohen drama Who By Fire, revealed by Broadcast, and recently-wrapped A Body that Works (Goof Shlishi).
Starring Rotem Sela (The Baker and the Beauty), Yehuda Levi (Fire Dancer), and Lior Raz (Fauda) alongside newcomer Gal Malaka, eight-part the latter is an emotional drama following a childless couple who enlist the help of a surrogate.
It is written by Shira Hadad (Wisdom of the Crowd) and Dror Mishani (Wisdom of the Crowd, The Missing File) and directed Shay Capon (The Writer). Hadad and Capon are co-creators together on this series, which is produced by Kuma Productions.
Keshet Broadcasting (KB) head of drama Karni Ziv ordered A Body that Works, which is expected to launch on commercial channel Keshet 12 in early 2023, with KI taking it to market soon after.
Ziv said: “The desire to create your own family unit is a driving force of many cultures around the world, and yet surrogacy remains a complex and emotionally charged issue that raises many questions, including here in Israel.”
A Body that Works and Who by Fire, from Jill Offman’s nascent Sixty-Six Media, will be joined by six other dramas on Keshet’s slate to enter production in Israel before the end of 2023.
These include Koda Communication’s returning crime drama Line in the Sand and true life-inspired limited drama Four Mothers, curenty in development with co-creators Rotem Shamir and Yuval Yefet.
Keren Shahar, KI’s chief operating officer added: “This is the first of a significant slate of dramas that reinforces Keshet’s commitment to bring typically Israeli stories to screen in Israel first, before we at KI get to share them with the rest of the world.”
