Streamer rebooting classic film franchise for small screen
Disney+ has ordered a pilot for a small screen revamp of classic film franchise Witch Mountain.
The series is a modern reimagining of the cult film series – spanning the 1975 original and most recent Dwayne Johnson-led Race to Witch Mountain (2009) – which follows two teens that develop strange abilities and discover their sleepy suburb may not be as idyllic as it seems.
Isabel Gravitt (The Watcher) and Levi Miller (A Wrinkle in Time) play leads Tia and Ben, while Bryce Dallas Howard (Black Mirror) stars as fellow lead Audrey, Tia’s devoted and loving mother.
Disney Television Studios label ABC Signature will produce. The pilot was co-written by Travis Fickett (Star Trek: Picard) and Terry Matalas (MacGyver) – who co-created Syfy series 12 Monkeys, loosely based on the 1995 film of the same name. Fickett and Matalas exec produce alongside pilot director Augustine Frizzell (Euphoria).
John Fox and John Davis of Davis Entertainment and Gary Marsh also exec produce.
The adaptation is the latest late-20th century fantasy and sci-fi Disney IP to be rebooted by the streaming giant, following recently launched Willow.
