Why are there so many HD camera formats?

One size does not fit all - there are different applications, budgets and production requirements.

  • Why is there no longer a DigiBeta equivalent in tapeless HD?
DigiBeta was fundamentally addressed by HDCAM as a high-definition equivalent. XDCAM HD422 is a tapeless equivalent of HDCAM, therefore anyone used to Digital Betacam has a very attractive solution with XDCAM HD422. XDCAM HD422 is also more affordable than DigiBeta.

  • How can directors ensure the camera they buy doesn't quickly become obsolete?
They should choose a manufacturer that supports all of its legacy formats, products and media. Sony demonstrates this with its HVR-Z1E camcorder, which was introduced in 2003 and is still the leading entry-level HD product.

  • How can producers/directors future-proof their decisions?
Look at formats and products approved by leading broadcasters. HDCAM SR is the industry's mastering format of choice and XDCAM HD422 is recognised as offering the most secure, stable and supported system that records at the preferred standards. Our media is also used and supported by current IT suppliers.

  • Where will Sony camera technology be heading next?
Faster transfer speeds for greater amounts of data giving more flexible workflows. We are committed to freeing up time and costs, so producers and directors can put their physical and financial investment back into the production and not have to worry about the tools that help bring it all to life.
