The boss of 3ality, the US technology company chosen by Sky to supply its stereo-3D production kit, has said he expects half of all UK TV shows to be shot in 3D by 2014.

Chief executive and co-founder Steve Schklair said the UK was “further along than most other countries” when it comes to 3D production, thanks largely to the efforts of Sky.

He also said that long-running, episodic TV would drive demand for stereoscopic camera rigs and image processors. “The distribution chain doesn’t need to change, but acquisition needs to keep up,” Schklair told Broadcast.

“It makes sense to future-proof your master by shooting in 3D if it is as fast as 2D and not much more expensive.”

He was speaking after his company announced that its kit is to be made available to UK producers through London rental company Arri Media.

The deal will see all of 3ality’s stereo rig and image processor gear handled by Arri Media from its Uxbridge premises, where stereoscopic technicians and a service centre will also be based.

Schklair said the deal would help 3ality to increase its revenues, which last year grew by 600%.

“We don’t expect to see that again but we’ll continue to see double-digit growth,” he added. “The UK will be a large part of that.”
