“I loved the surrealist style, the nods to classic comedy bits, and the slapstick, tactile, physical nature of the whole thing”
This BBC sitcom from stand-up comedian and clown school alum Mawaan Rizwan is side-splittingly funny, visually exciting, and relentlessly charming.
Rizwan plays Jamma, a millennial attention-seeker with major avoidance issues, while Russell Tovey plays alongside him as Guy, Jamma’s ever-grounded, older therapist boyfriend – an endearing clash of a pair that makes for a well-balanced show.
I loved the surrealist style, the nods to classic comedy bits, and the slapstick, tactile, physical nature of the whole thing. And I enjoyed how Rizwan embraced the complications and mess that comes with relationships, family and everything else. Plus, Jamma’s family (mostly played by Rizwan’s actual relatives) gave inspired comedic performances that had me cackling.
Honourable mentions for 2023 go to another hilarious BBC sitcom Such Brave Girls (BBC3), The Bear S2 (Disney+), Starstruck S3 (BBC3), Jury Duty (Amazon Freevee), and the latest season of Taskmaster (C4).
