LTE Broadcast (LTE-B) technology is being used as part of a content delivery pilot being carried out by Ericsson in association with Australia’s Telstra and 21st Century Fox’s Innovation Lab.
As part of the trial, consumer participants will be given immediate access to newly released movies in high quality, with the promise that it will have no impact on device performance or their mobile phone’s data plan.
The content delivery pilot will use Ericsson MediaFirst for content processing and origin, and its Unified Delivery Network for content delivery.
LTE-B allows telecoms operators to push a piece of multimedia content to a large number of users at once instead of sending it as individual streams to each device.
LTE-B could help bolster the eventual migration to 5G network technologies.
