World Productions’ BBC1 blockbuster to go head to head with Sid Gentle’s BBC America thriller

Bodyguard and Killing Eve

BBC1’s Bodyguard and BBC America’s Killing Eve are to go head-to-head at the 2019 Golden Globes.

The pair are in the running for best drama series, where they face Amazon drama Homecoming and two FX series - Ryan Murphy’s Pose and long-running drama The Americans - in a category won in 2018 by Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

World Productions’ ratings-smashing six-parter Bodyguard recently launched in the US on Netflix, which was an early investor in the project.

Sid Gentle Films’ Killing Eve, meanwhile, aired on BBC America to rave reviews in April.

Killing Eve star Sandra Oh also receives a nomination for best actress in a drama series, while Bodyguard’s Richard Madden is up for best actor.

A Very English Scandal

Meanwhile, BBC1’s A Very English Scandal is up for three awards.

Hugh Grant is nominated for best actor in a limited series or motion picture made for television for his performance as Jeremy Thorpe’s in Russell T Davies’ drama, with co-star Ben Whishaw up for best supporting actor.

Blueprint Pictures’ three-parter, which was co-produced with Amazon, is also in the running for best limited series, where it faces HBO’s Sharp Objects, FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace, TNT’s The Alienist and Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora.

Benedict Cumberbatch goes up against Grant for his performance in the title role of Little Island Productions’ Sky Atlantic/Showtime co-pro Patrick Melrose.

Who is America

Elsewhere, Sacha Baron Cohen is nominated for best actor in a musical or comedy for his various guises in Spelthorne Community Television’s HBO prank show Who Is America?.

In the film categories, BBC Films won a nod in the best actor – musical or comedy for John C Reilly’s performance as Oliver Hardy in the Jeff Pope-scripted Stan & Ollie.
