How it was done Cucumber was shot with a Red Epic camera anamorphically at 5K. Colourist Jamie Parry used Baselight to ‘pop’ accent colours wherever possible, while some scenes were darkened to enhance the sense of menace. Tracking and shapes were used to bring out some of the characters’ faces in challenging lighting situations. Banana, which required a similar look, was shot with an Arri Alexa with spherical lenses. A hard matte was added in the grade to give the same final aspect ratio to both series. Skies were altered to include more sunshine, colours were enhanced, vignettes and shapes were used to focus the image and flashback scenes were graded to create a range of alternative reality-type looks.
Watch it Cucumber airs on Thursdays at 9pm on Channel 4; Banana is on Thursdays at 10pm, E4; Tofu is on Thursdays at 10.30pm, 4oD
Tofu, a light-hearted online documentary series that explores modern sex in all its varied manifestations, is made by prolific YouTuber Benjamin Cook. It features a diverse range of candid chats with members of the public as well the stars of Cucumber and Banana. Each episode was edited and graded by Cook’s team while the audio was mixed by Dock10.
