Racing UK today delivered the first live sport to be shown in high definition on Channel 4, with the broadcast of the first day of the Cheltenham Festival.

Racing UK, the rights holder at 30 UK racecourses, said it will spend £24m on HD infrastructure over the next seven years as it prepares to launch a dedicated Racing UK HD channel in 2012.

The money will be spent on a BT-delivered, HD link between RMG’s 30 courses (plus Ascot) together with three outside broadcast trucks that will serve subscription channel Racing UK and terrestrial broadcasters.

In January it was announced that a new HD production facility that will be based at an as yet undecided location.
