Tracy Brabin has warned the government that a sale will jeopardise the “vast” economic benefits that the broadcaster brings to the region via its Leeds headquarters.

The online film Save the Spark features the likes of Call the Midwife writer Lisa Holdsworth, True North boss Andrew Sheldon and a number of Leeds-based production trainees – stating that they would be directly affected if a private owner opted to withdraw from the region.

West Yorkshire council has significantly invested in the region’s creative sector since C4’s Leeds relocation and Brabin, who also features in the film, warned a sale will “erode” that investment and the levelling up agenda.

“We can’t shy away from the potential impact [of a sale], not only on the West Yorkshire region, but the entire nations and regions,” she said. “Creative and exciting ecosystems have begun to develop and been fuelled by Channel 4’s out of London presence.”

The four-minute video ends with a plea to the public to raise the issue with government.
