Sales of broadcast and media technology fell 7.2% during 2009 according to the latest research by the International Association of Broadcasting Manufacturers (IABM).

The IABM Industry Index canvassed 61 companies and found that 47% were loss making in the 12-month period compared to the previous 12 months, with 29% moving from profit into loss.

Overall profitability has also fallen, by 12.5%, but the global profit to sales return remains at around 11%.

However, despite the doom and gloom, there are believed to be indicators that during the last quarter of 2009 the slide was halted.

The report concluded: “The first three quarters of 2009 were very difficult for the industry but signs appear more positive at the end of the year. European based companies appear to be recovering faster than their North American counterparts.”

The IABM Industry Index is published each quarter and tracks aggregate sales and operational profit trends across the broadcast and media technology sector, based on latest reported financial performance.
