The companies in the running for the Best Indie prize at the Broadcast Awards 2021 are responsible for producing some of the very best programmes of the last 12 months.

Here, contender 72 Films reveals how the past year has been for the indie, recalls top achievements and makes predictions on the future of the production business.

What achievement are you most proud of in the past year?

That we pretty much kept everyone on our books employed during the pandemic. The phenomenal effort of our production management in keeping going forward – and that the programmes were good.

How did you change your business model to combat the challenges of Covid-19?

We haven’t really. We have worked with broadcasters to enable our productions to continue in a Covid-19 environment.

What business models have you used to get your projects in production?

It’s a combination of fully funded projects and the odd piece of deficit funding, which keeps certain projects going forward.

Where will you be focusing your development and production efforts in 2021?

We will continue to work with people who can creatively collaborate with us and who understand the commercial world we are operating in.

What is your prediction for the production business?

These are strange, exciting times – and it going to get even tougher.
