Nine out of 15 most-viewed Disney+ international originals have hailed from Korea this year
Disney+ has unveiled a raft of new programming from Asia Pacific (APAC) and revealed the popularity of Korean originals among its subscribers.
The streamer used a Singapore-based showcase event to confirm a second series of hit Korean drama Moving is underway, while new shows include The Murky Stream, The Manipulated, Tempest and Made In Korea.
They join an existing slate that includes Korean dramas such as Unmasked, Low Life and Nine Puzzles.
Carol Choi, executive vice-president of originals at Walt Disney Company APAC, said shows from the region were developing “growing global resonance”.
She added that nine of the top 15 most-viewed international originals this year have hailed from Korea, with the country’s A Shop For Killers the most-viewed on Disney+ in APAC.
Disney+ is also moving further into unscripted programming in Japan with new reality series Travelling With Snow Man (working title), which is being produced in collaboration with Nippon TV.
The show will track the Snow Man pop band as they travel around the region.
The deal marks an expansion of Disney+ and Nippon TV’s partnership that has already seen them coproducing local language drama and animation together.
Disney+ is also expanding its anime offering, with a remake of manga series Cat’s Eye in the works and a three-season order confirmed for Disney Twisted-Wonderland The Animation. Both will hit the streamer next year.
