BBC1 named channel of the year for second consecutive year

BBC1 has won Channel of the Year at the Broadcast Awards for the second year running, as the corporation enjoyed a strong showing at the ceremony.

The PSB channel took home three further awards: Best Sports Programme for the Women’s Euros, Best Drama for This Is Going To Hurt and Best Documentary for headline-making single The Real Mo Farah.

Other BBC1 shows shortlisted included The Responder, Am I Being Unreasonable? and Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams.

The corporation won seven awards in total across a range of categories: BBC2’s Then Barbara Met Alan won for Best Single Drama and The Whistleblower: Inside the UN scooped the Best News/Current Affairs gong. BBC3’s Mood was voted Best Original Programme.

This Is Going To Hurt producer Sister picked up the Best Independent Production Company Award. The indie’s Sky Atlantic series Landscapers was also nominated for Best Drama Series, and its other titles in the qualifying period include The Split and The Baby.

The Special Recognition Award was presented to veteran BBC News presenter Huw Edwards, who presided over the corporation’s coverage of both the Platinum Jubilee, broke the news of the Queen’s death to the nation, and led coverage of her state funeral.

ITV took home five gongs, including Magnum Media’s Best Entertainment winner The 1% Club and Label 1 doc Worlds Collide: The Manchester Bombing, which was named Best Specialist Factual programme.

Jimmy Savile A British Horror Story

The final series of Hat Trick’s Derry Girls won Best Comedy for Channel 4, while one of Netflix’s two gongs was for 72 Films’ Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story, which won Best Documentary Series.

Wildflame Productions’ Drych: Fi, Rhyw ac Anabledd won the Best Multichannel category for S4C, while Santa Claus: The Serial Killer producer Forest was named the Emerging Indie of the Year.

Channel 4 and Netflix picked up two trophies apiece at the ceremony, while S4C and Apple TV+ both won a single award.
