Eclectic list of nominations sees S4C and BBC Scotland rub shoulders with Apple TV+ and Netflix
The Broadcast Awards 2023 has revealed an eclectic shortlist in which Am I Being Unreasonable?, Then Barbara Met Alan and Big Zuu’s Big Eats receive two nominations apiece, and the likes of S4C and BBC Scotland rub shoulders with Apple TV+ and Netflix.
Boffola’s BBC1 Daisy May Cooper comedy is shortlisted in Best Comedy Programme and Best Original Programme; Dragonfly’s disability campaign film is nominated for Best Original Programme and Best Single Drama; and Dave’s Boom food format makes the cut in Best Entertainment Programme and Best Multichannel Programme.
The BBC has a cumulative 41 nominations, including 19 for flagship channel BBC1, 10 for BBC2 and six for BBC3. Channel 4 has also landed 19 nominations, with ITV taking 14, and an additional two for ITV2.
Alongside the strong performance from the traditional powerhouses there are three nominations for S4C and six for Netflix – the best performance by both in recent years.
Netflix does well in animation and factual. It has Shaun the Sheep: Flight Before Christmas (broadcast first on BBC1) and Robin Robin (both Aardman) in Best Children’s Programme, plus stop motion anthology The House (Nexus Studios) in Single Drama, plus The Tinder Swindler (Raw) and Jimmy Saville: A British Horror Story (72 Films) in Documentary Programme and Documentary Series respectively.

S4C has achieved two slots on the Best Multichannel Programme for Drych: Fi, Rhyw ac Anabledd (Wildflame) and Ysgol Ni: Y Moelwyn (Darlun), alongside Efaciwîs (Wildflame) in Best Children’s Programme.
Channel 4 is strong in the Best Comedy Programme category, with three of the six nominations: Derry Girls (Hat Trick), Big Boys and Stath Lets Flats (both Roughcut), while Apple TV+ makes its Broadcast Awards debut for Bad Sisters (Merman) and Lovely Little Farm (Darrall Macqueen).
BBC Scotland’s two nominations are for The Hunt for Bible John (Firecrest) and The Glasgow Mela 2022 (Demus Productions)/
In Channel of the Year, last year’s winner BBC1 will compete with stablemates BBC2 and BBC3, plus Channel 4, ITV and Sky News.
And in a highly competitive Best Independent Production Company category, which had a vast number of entries, the contenders are CPL Productions, Dancing Ledge Productions, See-Saw Films, Sister, South Shore and Whisper.
The awards take place on 8 February at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House on Park Lane.
