Fearnley joined the corporation's technology division at the beginning of the year in an acting capacity while a permanent candidate was sought but has now been confirmed in the role. His remit includes overseeing content creation for Hutchison 3G's planned mobile phone service, the BBC's streaming partnership with Real Networks and pay-per-view cricket internet streaming with Sky Sports and Wisden.
Smashed Atom was a joint venture between Flextech and Stanford University's Atomic Tangerine venture consultancy, which ceased trading last October. It was spearheaded by Fearnley who was heading up Atomic Tangerine's European arm and BBC director of new media and technology Ashley Highfield who was then head of Flextech Interactive (Broadcast 19.9.01).
BBC Technology began trading on 31 March 2001 and is one of three commercial subsidiaries that form BBC Ventures which is currently awaiting DCMS permission to set up as a holding company.
