BBC Sport is to produce its first high-definition recording for broadcast at The Hastings Direct International Championship next week.

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the women's international tennis tournament (16-18 June) will be captured in HD for future proofing and will be broadcast on BBC1 and BBC2. Although the pictures will be broadcast in standard definition the high-definition footage will produce better quality images for viewers.

A BBC spokesperson said that a decision on whether to record Wimbledon with high-definition pictures "will be made next year".

Four Sony HD cameras will be used to capture the championships, as well as a Thomson Super Slow-Mo HD camera.

BBC Outside Broadcasts has delivered a number of projects in HD before - such as The Promsfor Japanese broadcaster NHK - but this will be the first recorded for BBC Sport.
