The new 'EQ' set up, which will allow BBC Resources to colour grade, up convert and generally finish both in-house BBC HD programmes and jobs from external clients is to be delivered this week and will be operational within days.
Speaking today at the Broadcast High Definition conference in London, BBC post production head of capital development Andy King said: 'The BBC has always had a cautious approach to buying HD kit even though we are seen as innovators. But we have recently secured a deal to produce an HD version for the Discovery HD Theatre channel and this proves to us that there is a market for good HD content. We wouldn't have invested in the kit without the Discovery deal."
BBC Post Production already has a Discreet HD Fire and an Alchemist platinum HD converter. It also recently bought both an HD Shadow telecine machine and upgraded its Spirit to a Spirit HD. In total the post wing of BBC Resources has spent almost 1.5 million on HD kit in the last two years.
The Broadcast HD conference, sponsored by Avid, is taking place today at the Radisson SAS Portman hotel in London.
