Atomos has upgraded its Samurai portable field recorder to support Avid’s DNxHD codec.

It will allow editors to use native codec with higher bitrates and 4:2:2, 10-bit resolution ready-to-edit from the Samurai’s HDD or SSD instantly.

Avid DNxHD codec will be available “late 2011”, priced at £89 for Samurai users.

Atomos chief executive and co-founder Jeromy Young said: “All the benefits of capture-at-the-camera will be there: it’s fast, the quality is better, and production costs are dramatically lower because of commodity storage.”
