Although a Silicon Grail spokeswoman said no comment could be made at this time, it is believed that a deal for either the whole or part of the company will be concluded next week. Apple could not be reached for comment.
Silicon Grail launched in 1995 with pioneering 2D compositing package Chalice and has since developed high-end compositing tool Rayz - now on version 2 - which is a direct competitor to Nothing Real's Shake compositing system. Both are widely used in the post-production of feature films - Weta Digital used both on The Lord of the Rings.
Apple bought Nothing Real in February although no details of the deal are available (Broadcast, 22.2.02).
