AP has embarked on its most ambitious archiving project to date as part of a wider HD upgrade of its news-gathering operation.

Director of global video television news David Hoad said some restoration of the 1.3 million items was required, particularly older items recorded to film stock.

The news agency is also introducing 200 HD cameras, upgrading its mobile satellites and enhancing its backhaul capabilities as part of the move.

Entertainment news will be the first to get the makeover in November.
